[0:08] Forest Sawyer.
[0:09] >> Good evening. In the Soviet Union today,
[0:11] yet another sign of the growing unrest
[0:13] threatening to overwhelm President
[0:15] Mikail Gorbachoff. With just two hours
[0:17] noticed, Gorbachoff went on national
[0:19] television to appeal for an end to the
[0:22] panic buying now sweeping the country.
[0:24] Gorbachev told consumers huge price
[0:26] hikes are needed if the economy is to
[0:29] ever improve. ABC's Rick Indeper has
[0:32] more.

[0:36] caught most Soviet viewers by surprise.

[1:17] The Soviet president used tonight's
[1:19] speech to make his case for economic
[1:21] reform.
[1:23] Sounding less like a Marxist than a
[1:25] marketeteer, Gorbachev said much has to
[1:28] be done to make the market work.
[1:30] Addressing the nation's workers, he
[1:32] warned that for those who are not
[1:33] willing to work, they will have a hard
[1:35] time. People will be laid off, he said.
[1:38] But he didn't say how many. Nor did he
[1:41] say when the national referendum
