[0:03] Tonight, a special plate of dirty

[0:05] dining. And we mean dirty. What health

[0:07] inspectors found inside a local

[0:09] restaurant's kitchen. A killer is on the

[0:12] loose tonight. New details about the

[0:14] search for one of Fox 12's most wanted.

[0:17] You were getting seconds and they were

[0:19] sweating them off. A local gym's mission

[0:21] to stay trim this Thanksgiving. But

[0:24] first, a holiday in the dark.

[0:26] >> We've had that transformer go out before

[0:28] and it was pretty loud. High winds and

[0:30] record setting rain leave a lasting

[0:32] impact and the worst may be yet to come.

[0:34] It's first on Fox.

[0:37] Good evening. Thanks for joining us. I'm

[0:38] Kevin Kawari. Wayne and Shauna have the

[0:40] night off. First on Fox tonight, heavy

[0:42] wind, rain, and even snow. The weather

[0:45] got in the way of many Thanksgiving Day

[0:46] celebrations. And tonight, there is

[0:48] growing concern the trip home could be

[0:50] even worse. We have live team coverage.

[0:52] Meteorologist Stephanie Kraovich is

[0:54] tracking mountain snow in the weather

[0:55] center. But we begin with KPTV's David

[0:57] Freighus. He's live in Northwest

[0:59] Portland tonight. More, David.

[1:00] >> Well, the rain has actually eased up for

[1:02] the last hour or so, let's say. But if

[1:04] you take a look down at this train, you

[1:05] can see it's still blocked up and all

[1:06] over the area. When we do have those

[1:08] heavy rains, that that's when we get

[1:10] those puddles. Now, this storm today did

[1:12] cause some Thanksgiving Day trouble, but

[1:14] still it and it added to already

[1:17] impressive rain totals.

[1:21] PGE crews work on yet another wet and

[1:23] windy day, sawing through a huge tree

[1:26] that toppled onto power lines, snapping

[1:28] them and leaving this Lake Asiggo

[1:30] neighborhood without power.

[1:33] >> It left the Rumble family to cook turkey

[1:35] dinner in the dark.

[1:36] >> Actually, everything was almost done

[1:38] except for the mashed potatoes, the

[1:39] gravy.

[1:40] >> With 14 people together, they lit a fire

[1:42] and gave thanks for good company and

[1:44] leftovers. Mashed

[1:45] >> potatoes. Really good.

[1:46] >> Oh, yeah. Very good.

[1:48] >> Yes. Yep.

[1:49] >> Maybe you can have some later.

[1:50] >> Yeah.

[1:51] >> They're all smiles, but after almost a

[1:53] month of rain, drivers are starting to

[1:54] get a bit cranky.

[1:56] >> Cold, drizzly. It's not very fun to

[1:59] drive in.

[2:01] >> This month, we've had an almost constant

[2:03] patter of rain on the windshield. Take a

[2:05] look at the numbers. Since November 1st,

[2:07] we've had more than 10 in of rain, more

[2:10] than double our average rainfall for

[2:11] this month of about 4 in. In all, 20 out

[2:15] of 23 days wet weather. It has drivers

[2:17] heading home from Thanksgiving dinner,

[2:19] easing up on the gas.

[2:21] >> Well, I think I slow down a bit and I

[2:23] hope everybody else is.

[2:25] >> I don't use cruise control, that's for

[2:27] sure. Drive around 60 65.

[2:29] >> And if you're sick of the constant

[2:30] downpour, ask around and you'll likely

[2:32] find a diehard Oregonian happy to see

[2:35] puddles.

[2:35] >> I think it's wonderful. We're having wet

[2:38] weather.

[2:38] >> I like the snow, so it takes moisture

[2:41] for that. But with the ground so soaked,

[2:43] trees like this one are blowing over

[2:44] more easily, doing damage that still

[2:46] wasn't enough to soak this family's

[2:48] Thanksgiving.

[2:49] >> The family enjoyed it, and we're so

[2:51] happy to be together.

[2:54] >> We are less than an inch from breaking a

[2:56] record, a rain record set back in 1942.

[2:59] And with the predictions, in the next

[3:01] week or so, we could come close to, if

[3:03] not break that record. Live in Northwest

[3:05] Portland, David Freighus, the 10:00

[3:06] News. Well, Thanksgiving travelers

[3:08] usually have enough to contend with, but

[3:10] add a little snow into the mix and

[3:12] things could get downright dangerous on

[3:13] mountain pass roads during the next few

[3:15] days. A winter storm watch was in effect

[3:17] today for the north and central Oregon

[3:19] Cascades. Drivers should be prepared for

[3:21] snow covered roads and limited

[3:22] visibility in those areas.

[3:27] Our team coverage continues tonight with

[3:28] meteorologist Stephanie Kraovich. She's

[3:30] in for Mark Nelson tonight with your

[3:31] first weather. Steph,

[3:33] >> hello. Yes, we are talking about a lot

[3:35] of snow in the Cascade. Still a heavy

[3:37] snow warning in effect until 6:00

[3:39] tomorrow morning for the Cascades.

[3:42] Here's a look at the 24-hour snow totals

[3:44] for our ski resorts. Six in six inches

[3:47] of new snow at Timberline, but they've

[3:49] had close to 2 feet of new snow just

[3:52] since Tuesday. And as we show you the

[3:54] live radar picture, you can see that

[3:56] snow is still coming down in the Mount

[3:58] Hood area. A little bit heavier shower.

[4:00] And as we cruise to the uh west, you can

[4:04] tell the Portland area drying out just a

[4:07] little bit. I'll have details on how

[4:08] much more wet weather is ahead in your

[4:11] 7-day forecast coming up in just a bit.

[4:14] >> All right, Steph, thanks. You may be off

[4:15] for the next few days, but Fox 12 has

[4:16] you covered around the clock. We'll

[4:18] bring you the latest weather and traffic

[4:19] information during all our newscasts.

[4:21] There's also information you can access

[4:23] online on our website, kptv.com.

[4:26] Oregon State Police tonight are

[4:27] investigating a deadly head-on crash

[4:29] near Corvalis. The accident happened

[4:31] this morning on Highway 34 near

[4:32] Interstate 5. For some reason, a driver

[4:34] in a Chevy Blazer crossed the center

[4:36] median and hit an oncoming Dodge

[4:38] Durango. Both drivers died. They're

[4:41] identified as Sorry Wrath of Albany and

[4:43] Gregory Gatherings of Lebanon. A

[4:45] passenger in the Blazer is in critical

[4:47] condition tonight. If you saw the crash,

[4:49] please call state police.

[4:53] In tonight's Fox 12's most wanted,

[4:54] Portland police need your help solving a

[4:56] brutal murder. Officers found

[4:58] 29-year-old Leonardo Perez stabbed to

[5:00] death at Northeast 148th Avenue and

[5:02] Cooch around 11:00 last night. And

[5:04] tonight, his killer is still on the

[5:06] loose. KPTV's Jamie Wilson is live in

[5:08] the Fox 12 mobile newsroom with the

[5:10] story. Jamie.

[5:11] >> Well, police tell us they don't know

[5:12] what the motive could have been behind

[5:14] this murder. But tonight, they and the

[5:16] victim's relatives want answers.

[5:20] Tonight, rubber gloves still mark the

[5:22] spot where police found the victim of a

[5:24] deadly stabbing. Officers discovered

[5:26] Leonardo Perez with several stab wounds

[5:29] right in front of these apartments.

[5:32] Larry Serbic lives across the street and

[5:34] he talked with police.

[5:36] >> But I suspected that when they showed up

[5:38] and knocked on my door that something

[5:41] more than the norm happened around here.

[5:44] >> Larry says the norm is a lot of noise

[5:47] and traffic coming from this house two

[5:49] doors down from the apartments. And this

[5:51] is where some of Perez's relatives

[5:53] showed up tonight looking for answers

[5:55] about his death. They did not want to go

[5:58] on camera, but they say Perez was

[6:00] staying here and they don't know who

[6:02] would have wanted him dead.

[6:04] >> That's what I heard yelling and

[6:05] screaming, but then like I said, I heard

[6:08] that hear that most every night.

[6:11] >> Larry says he did notice the commotion,

[6:13] but he didn't suspect anything unusual,

[6:16] especially not murder. He says problems

[6:18] with gangs and drugs have been

[6:20] escalating in the last few years, but

[6:23] now he feels it is official.

[6:25] >> Yeah, it does scare us a little bit. It

[6:28] uh means that maybe more than I always

[6:32] suspected is going on around here.

[6:36] >> Now, an autopsy on Perez will be done

[6:38] tomorrow morning, but tonight, Portland

[6:40] police are still searching for any clues

[6:42] about the suspect. If you know anything,

[6:44] call them right away. Live from the

[6:46] mobile newsroom tonight, Jamie Wilson,

[6:48] the 10 o'clock news.

[6:50] >> Tonight, a mother in Gladstone is

[6:51] praying for the safe return of her

[6:53] 14-year-old daughter. Alexis Marshall

[6:55] has been gone since Monday morning. Her

[6:57] mother says Alexis has run away twice

[6:59] before, but she usually calls to say

[7:01] that she's okay. This time, she hasn't

[7:03] made any contact.

[7:05] >> She was supposed to be over here for

[7:07] Thanksgiving with me. She's never been

[7:09] without me on holidays. And uh she

[7:13] hasn't called, she hasn't done anything.

[7:14] Can't keep my cell phone with me 24/7.

[7:17] >> Tina Kirtland says she's tried

[7:19] counseling, but it hasn't worked. She

[7:20] has called the police tonight. She's

[7:22] worried that her daughter may be in

[7:24] danger. A frightening start to

[7:26] Thanksgiving in northeast Portland today

[7:28] as fire tears through an apartment

[7:30] building, leaving some people with no

[7:32] home for the holiday. KPTV's Joe Lethia

[7:35] has more.

[7:37] At the Parkway Garden apartment complex,

[7:40] it was a scary wakeup call for resident

[7:42] Kevin Goodland. woke up to a bunch of

[7:44] noise and crashing and banging outside.

[7:46] Looked out and I thought somebody was

[7:47] breaking in and I saw a bunch of red

[7:48] lights.

[7:48] >> A fire had started in the apartment

[7:50] below Kevin's and it spread fast.

[7:53] >> Grabbed my shoes and socks, ran out the

[7:54] front door and it was by that time it

[7:56] was too late. It was a bunch of black

[7:57] smoke and flames coming out of there.

[7:58] >> Everyone escaped safely and firefighters

[8:00] were on scene right away. They put out

[8:03] the fire and stopped it from spreading

[8:05] to other units, but not before it gutted

[8:08] the two apartments. I haven't heard

[8:09] anything yet, but from the looks of

[8:10] things, uh, I got a couple holes in my

[8:12] roof, and I saw him throwing a bunch of

[8:13] stuff out the back window.

[8:14] >> The fire caused parts of Sandy Boulevard

[8:16] to be shut down, forcing drivers to find

[8:18] another route. And despite the fact his

[8:21] home is no more, Kevin Goodland says he

[8:23] will still celebrate the holiday.

[8:25] >> I don't have Thanksgiving in my house. I

[8:26] got family and friends that we usually

[8:28] get together. Um, I'm more worried about

[8:29] getting back to work on Friday with my

[8:31] work clothes that burned up

[8:32] >> in Northeast Portland. Jovia, the 10:00

[8:34] news. Well, tonight officials say they

[8:36] still aren't sure what caused the fire.

[8:39] Investigators are also trying to figure

[8:40] out what caused a house fire to break

[8:42] out near Beaverton today. The fire

[8:43] started around 6:00 this morning on

[8:45] Southwest Bunker Oaks Road. Firefighters

[8:48] say they saw some smoke coming from the

[8:49] manufactured home when they got there.

[8:51] Authorities say the person who lives

[8:52] there was taken to the hospital with

[8:54] minor injuries.

[8:56] >> The 10:00 news is just getting started.

[8:59] It may look hot and fresh, but coming

[9:01] up, Dirty Dining finds out which local

[9:03] restaurant health inspectors worry may

[9:05] serve you up bad food by mistake. He's

[9:08] hardly even old enough to drive, but a

[12:06] Plus, Madonna, Liz, Brooke, Lost Star

[12:08] Photos, and the 30-year-old virgin's

[12:10] back. Next Insider

[12:12] >> tonight at 11:30 on Fox 12 Oregon.

[12:18] >> In news from across America tonight, an

[12:19] armed standoff in Chicago is nearly in

[12:22] its 24th hour tonight. Police say a

[12:24] gunman is holding two women hostage in

[12:26] an apartment. Police arrived on scene

[12:27] after receiving calls about shots fired.

[12:29] But as far as they know, no one has been

[12:31] hurt. Relatives of the women aren't

[12:33] making the job any easier for police.

[12:35] They've been shouting at officers on

[12:36] scene. A Texas teen is in trouble with

[12:39] the law tonight. Police say he crashed

[12:41] his parents' car into a house while

[12:43] driving drunk. The 16-year-old driver

[12:45] crossed four lanes of traffic, skidded

[12:47] across two yards, and through a through

[12:50] a retaining wall before slamming into a

[12:52] house. The teen was driving with his

[12:53] younger sister. Neither of them were

[12:55] seriously hurt. An earthquake with a

[12:58] magnitude of at least 4.5 hit Hawaii

[13:00] today. It was off the coast of the Big

[13:02] Island in the same area where two

[13:04] stronger quakes hit last month. People

[13:06] could feel it on the Big Island, Maui,

[13:07] and Aahu. There were also power outages

[13:09] on the Big Island and Kona, but there

[13:11] were no reports of any damage. Last

[13:13] month, a magnitude 6 and 6.7 quake hit

[13:16] that area, causing power outages, bridge

[13:18] collapses, and road closures. Those

[13:20] quakes caused an estimated $200 million

[13:22] in damage. Well, the countdown is on

[13:25] until retailers throw open their doors

[13:27] to Black Friday shoppers. But if

[13:29] throwing elbows at the sock bin just

[13:30] isn't your thing, you may want to take

[13:32] care of your bargain hunting online.

[13:35] More holiday shoppers are expected to

[13:36] turn to the internet this year, but

[13:38] there are some risks you need to

[13:40] consider. Before you buy, examine the

[13:42] seller's track record. Also, look for

[13:44] the icon that indicates online purchases

[13:46] are secure. If you can, use your credit

[13:49] card in case you need to dispute the

[13:50] charges. And finally, keep documentation

[13:53] of your order. Well, it's the day known

[13:56] for deals and discounts, but you don't

[13:57] have to wait until tomorrow to start

[13:58] shopping. New at 11, local stores open

[14:00] early, even late tonight, in hopes of

[14:03] luring holiday shoppers. We're live with

[14:05] the story coming up on the 11:00 news.

[14:11] >> Salmon, shrimp, and spaghetti sounds

[14:13] like all the makings for a perfect

[14:14] dinner, right? Well, not so fast. KPTV's

[14:16] Carrie Tomlinson serves up tonight's

[14:19] Dirty Dining.

[14:20] >> This restaurant has been open for about

[14:22] a year, but the locals still call it the

[14:25] new place. However, they are hoping that

[14:27] the health score gets better with age.

[14:30] We're at the new restaurant in the new

[14:32] hotel near the new Salem Conference

[14:34] Center. This is Bentley's Grill, ranking

[14:37] high with diners, but not so high with

[14:39] the health department. Bentley's

[14:41] received a 71 out of 100 this summer,

[14:44] just two points from an Fgrade.

[14:47] Inspectors were concerned that Bentleys

[14:49] might serve you bad food by mistake

[14:52] because they found expired food in the

[14:54] fridge. old spaghetti, old chicken cream

[14:58] stock, old curried mayo, and old lime

[15:01] cream dressing. They also found dirty

[15:04] floors at the walls and under equipment

[15:06] and wiping cloths stored in dirty water.

[15:10] Plus, they tested food to see if it was

[15:13] cold enough to keep bacteria from

[15:15] growing. They found problems with goat

[15:17] cheese, clam chowder, salmon, and shrimp

[15:21] in the temperature danger zone. They

[15:23] made the restaurant throw out any food

[15:25] that could be dangerous. These and other

[15:28] violations brought Bentley's down to a

[15:30] score near failing. The company running

[15:32] the restaurant says they had a new team

[15:34] in place not familiar with testing

[15:36] requirements, but now they say they've

[15:39] fixed everything. The company president

[15:41] says, quote, "We passed our inspection.

[15:43] We were not closed down." I think that

[15:46] speaks for itself to some extent.

[15:48] Bentley's received a 94 at its first big

[15:51] inspection ever last year. The

[15:53] restaurant hopes this year they can turn

[15:55] their 71 into something much higher and

[15:58] much more appetizing to the diners who

[16:00] give this place good reviews. We will

[16:02] show you some highs and lows for other

[16:04] grill restaurants in this area coming up

[16:06] tomorrow night on the 10:00 news. In the

[16:08] Fox 12 kitchen, Carrie Tomlinson, the

[16:10] 10:00 news. Well, while many of us were

[16:13] in bed this morning with visions of

[16:14] cranberries still in our heads, dozens

[16:16] of people were breaking a sweat in

[16:18] preparation for today's big meal. More

[16:20] than 70 people showed up for the

[16:22] Hufferpuffer Turkey Stuffer Power

[16:24] Pilgrim Boot Camp. The circuit training

[16:26] class is held every Thanksgiving at the

[16:28] trainers club in Lake Asiggo. Just like

[16:30] the Macy's parade, football, and pumpkin

[16:32] pie, many have made the workout a part

[16:33] of their holiday tradition. And believe

[16:35] it or not, on a day that's known for

[16:36] leisure, these people smile as they

[16:38] sweat on Thanksgiving.

[16:41] We come so much fun and people should

[16:44] just come down and exercise and then you

[16:47] can eat a lot of food at at the end of

[16:48] the day.

[16:49] >> Let's go. KEEP YOUR HEAD UP, CORE TIGHT.

[16:51] SUCK IN YOUR GUT.

[16:53] >> In addition to helping members build up

[16:55] an appetite, the trainers club says the

[16:56] boot camp creates a sense of community

[16:58] as well.

[17:02] >> Well, as if the tryptophan in the turkey

[17:04] isn't enough to make you tired, the rain

[17:05] just keeps coming and coming and coming.

[17:08] Yes. A good day to work out inside.

[17:10] Actually,

[17:10] >> inside. Definitely inside.

[17:12] >> Did I say outside? Yeah, there's the

[17:13] trip to family.

[17:14] >> No, you did say inside. Yeah, you made a

[17:16] good point.

[17:16] >> Yes. So, a lot of rain today. Not as

[17:18] much on tap for tomorrow. In fact, we're

[17:20] getting a nice little break in downtown

[17:22] Portland right now. As we take a live

[17:24] look through our Fox Tower cam, you can

[17:26] see no raindrops on the lens as we

[17:29] speak. That doesn't mean we're not going

[17:30] to see any as the night moves on and

[17:32] into tomorrow, but it looks like off and

[17:34] on rain showers. We won't have that

[17:36] steady, heavy rain we had at times,

[17:38] especially early in the day today. A

[17:40] look at your live radar picture shows

[17:41] the Portland area checking in dry right

[17:44] now, but you can see that shower that

[17:45] moved through during the past hour,

[17:47] cruising to the east pretty quickly, but

[17:49] we do have more showers on the way. As

[17:51] we take a little bit wider look, you can

[17:53] see some spots getting some heavier rain

[17:56] and some very heavy mountain snow in the

[17:58] Cascades. Several inches piling up today

[18:01] at all the ski resorts and along those

[18:03] mountain passes. So, not good news for

[18:06] travelers uh making their way across the

[18:08] mountains for Thanksgiving. Now, let's

[18:11] take a look at our rainfall totals for

[18:12] today. This is through 5:00 p.m. We've

[18:14] picked up about 300ths of an inch of

[18:16] rain since then in Portland. So, uh

[18:19] close to 3/4 of an inch of rain by the

[18:22] end of the uh night tonight is possible.

[18:25] So, a very wet November as you heard

[18:27] David Freigher say earlier. We've seen

[18:29] breezy conditions, gusts today above 20

[18:31] miles hour. Still a little breezy out

[18:33] there. Feeling a little chillier than

[18:35] those current temperatures. Right now

[18:36] we're at 46 at the Portland airport.

[18:39] Now, uh temperatures across the region

[18:41] looking like this. 39 in Redmond, 45 in

[18:44] Eugene. If you're headed to Corvalis for

[18:46] the big Civil War game for tomorrow, be

[18:49] prepared for off and on rain showers and

[18:50] some chilly conditions. So, bundle up,

[18:52] take that rain gear with you because

[18:54] there will be a few raindrops, although

[18:56] it won't be the steady constant rain out

[18:58] there. As we put the satellite picture

[19:00] into motion, you can see no real

[19:01] organized system moving in for tomorrow,

[19:03] but that cold, spotty look to the

[19:05] satellite picture indicates a lot of

[19:07] instability. So, we'll see those off

[19:09] andon rain showers. Our next big system

[19:11] moves in Sunday night into Monday. And

[19:13] with it, we could see a combination with

[19:15] some colder air moving down from Canada.

[19:18] And when that combination happens, we

[19:20] have a chance for some very low snow

[19:22] levels, possibly about 1,000 feet or

[19:24] even lower. So, we'll be keeping an eye

[19:26] on the possibility of valley snow Sunday

[19:29] night into Monday morning, but that's

[19:31] still a ways out. And uh most of the

[19:33] forecast models are saying about 1,000

[19:35] ft for that snow level. The rain snow

[19:38] forecast playing out like this. You can

[19:39] see it starts to kind of thin out a

[19:41] little bit tomorrow and into Saturday.

[19:42] We got a nice little break for the first

[19:44] part of the day and then Saturday night,

[19:46] Saturday night into Sunday, that next

[19:48] system rolls on in and brings with it a

[19:50] lot of snow and some lower snow levels

[19:52] with that chillier air moving in from

[19:55] our north. So, here's a look at how

[19:56] those snow levels are going to drop by

[19:59] uh Sunday into Monday to about 1,000

[20:01] feet. Now, those higher elevations will

[20:03] still be picking up several inches of

[20:05] snow. Your weekend getaway forecast

[20:07] looking great for skiing if you have the

[20:09] proper traction devices to get up to the

[20:11] mountain timberline open with lots of

[20:14] fresh new snow. The forecast for the

[20:16] Oregon coast scattered rain showers.

[20:17] Small craft advisory in effect and the

[20:19] coast range uh getting hit with some

[20:21] snow with those lower snow levels. So

[20:23] watch out for that with the Wamut Valley

[20:25] looking at temperatures in the 40s. The

[20:27] gorge in eastern Oregon rain and snow

[20:30] showers. The snow level at about 3,500

[20:32] feet. Lots of snow during the next 24

[20:34] hours on the slopes. And here's a look

[20:36] at your forecast for Portland tomorrow.

[20:38] Off and on rain showers, temperatures on

[20:40] the chilly side. We'll be topping out in

[20:42] the mid to upper 40s. Not quite as gusty

[20:44] as we were today, but still wet off and

[20:46] on. There's your first live local 7-day

[20:49] forecast. 47 tomorrow and 45 on

[20:52] Saturday. Tune in to Andy Carson

[20:53] tomorrow on Good Day Oregon.

[24:30] Hey, turkey day football time.

[24:32] Traditionally miserable for Portland's

[24:34] Joey Harrington, but then he left

[24:36] Detroit and you know what? Life is

[24:38] pretty good now. It got a lot better for

[24:40] the former Duck when he went back there

[24:42] today and dissected his former teammates

[24:44] for three touchdowns. One to Randy

[24:46] Mcichael and then two more to Marty

[24:58] Another quarterback had a memorable day.

[25:00] Tony Romo ties a Dallas team record

[25:05] Tampa Bay. Mighty efficient also

[25:07] throwing 29 passes and completing 22 of

[25:09] them for over 300 yards. I don't even

[25:12] need to tell you. Dallas wins 38-10. A

[25:14] rare third game today in Kansas City

[29:17] >> Now on the 11:00 news, scoring big at

[29:19] local stores. We're live with the

[29:21] information you need to know before you

[29:22] shop. A tense standoff continues tonight

[29:25] after a gunman takes two women hostage.

[29:27] And the secret to surviving Thanksgiving

[29:29] may be in the numbers 224.

[29:32] The 11:00 news starts now.

[29:36] I'm Kevin Kawari in tonight for Wayne

[29:37] and Shauna. And here is a look at Fox

[29:39] 12's top stories at 11.

[29:42] The roads were slick with rain today

[29:43] because of this storm. But that wasn't

[29:45] the only problem. In Lake Asiggo, wind

[29:47] and rain brought down a train, knocking

[29:49] out power lines and darkening an entire

[29:52] neighborhood. meant people had to

[29:53] improvise to cook their Thanksgiving

[29:55] dinners. Meanwhile, Thanksgiving

[29:57] travelers on the roads say they slowed

[29:59] down a bit to deal with often heavy rain

[30:01] at times that left big pools of water

[30:03] all over thing places like the freeways.

[30:06] We've had more than 10 inches of rain so

[30:08] far this month. We are less than an inch

[30:10] from breaking a more than 60-year-old

[30:12] record in northwest Portland. David

[30:14] Fredus, the 11:00 news.

[30:16] >> Some people living in this northeast

[30:17] Portland apartment complex are without

[30:19] homes tonight. A fire ripped through the

[30:21] Parkway Garden Apartments early this

[30:23] morning. The blaze broke out beneath

[30:25] Kevin Goodland's apartment. Then he

[30:27] heard a crash and saw the red lights of

[30:29] a fire truck. Everyone got out safely

[30:31] and firefighters stopped the flames from

[30:32] spreading to other units, but the fire

[30:34] gutted two apartments. Kevin Goodland's

[30:36] is one of them.

[30:37] >> I haven't heard anything yet, but from

[30:38] the looks of things, uh, I got a couple

[30:40] holes in my roof and I saw them throwing

[30:41] a bunch of stuff out the back windows.

[30:43] >> Goodland managed to find somewhere else

[30:44] to celebrate the holiday. So far,

[30:46] there's no word on the cause. at where

[30:49] >> ah the holidays

[30:53] >> the U tide cheer line

[30:56] >> kicking off with the joy of day after

[30:59] Thanksgiving shopping.

[31:00] >> Please just uh be patient with us as we

[31:02] go through this day.

[31:03] >> It's a ceremonial kickoff to the holiday

[31:05] season. It creates a lot of energy buzz

[31:07] and excitement about the holidays and

[31:09] consumers get to see what exactly is

[31:12] going to be discounted and where the

[31:13] best buys are going to be.

[31:15] The National Retail Federation says 137

[31:18] million shoppers will hit the stores

[31:20] this weekend looking for those best

[31:22] buys, especially on the day dubbed Black

[31:24] Friday. Overall, the NRF projects

[31:27] holiday spending will be up 5% from

[31:29] 2005, just slightly above the 10-year

[31:32] average, but not as strong as last year.

[31:34] >> We think the economic indicators are key

[31:36] when determining what consumers are are

[31:38] going to do. Uh we look at gas prices,

[31:41] we look at housing starts, we look at

[31:43] employment data, and that's all telling

[31:45] us that we're going to see very modest

[31:47] gains.

[31:47] >> What hasn't changed? Shoppers go through

[31:50] this because they feel they have to.

[31:52] >> Holiday spending is not discretionary

[31:54] spending when it comes to consumers.

[31:55] It's necessity spending.

[31:57] >> Let the festivities begin

[32:00] in Washington. I'm Ki Young Law.

[32:02] >> Indeed. And KPTV's Jamie Wilson joins us

[32:04] live now with what's new at 11. And

[32:06] Jamie, I can't believe it. Folks are

[32:07] already they're getting a jump start on

[32:08] things.

[32:09] >> They absolutely are. The registers are

[32:11] already ringing here at Comp USA in

[32:13] Tiger. They are open for a special 3

[32:16] hours tonight before the big day starts

[32:19] tomorrow. Uh and they had some pretty

[32:20] amazing deals. You may have seen this in

[32:22] the paper today. If you buy and activate

[32:24] that cell phone, you get $200 off any

[32:28] other purchase in the store. It's pretty

[32:30] good, right? And well, it was plenty to

[32:32] get a lot of people out of the house,

[32:34] even on Thanksgiving.

[32:44] And they're off. Hundreds of shoppers

[32:47] rushed into Comp USA tonight for these

[32:49] Thanksgiving bargains. But before they

[32:51] opened at 9:00, they all waited, lined

[32:54] up around the parking lot standing in

[32:56] the rain. These early early bird

[32:58] shoppers say they love the idea of

[33:00] starting Christmas on Thanksgiving and

[33:02] most say it is worth it.

[33:06] I I was surprised. I thought they'd open

[33:08] tomorrow morning and when I saw on the

[33:10] ad, I'm like, "Wow, okay, I've got

[33:12] something to do tonight."

[33:13] >> What do you think? Is this a good idea?

[33:14] Do you appreciate that they do this?

[33:16] >> I do. It's better than 5:00 in the

[33:17] morning.

[33:18] >> Doesn't really matter to me if they're

[33:19] open or not. I'd come tomorrow.

[33:22] >> Now, most stores are opening at 5:00

[33:24] a.m. tomorrow. That's including J C

[33:26] Penney, Toys R Us, Best Buy, Kohl's, and

[33:28] Fred Meyer. opening at 6:00 a.m.

[33:31] includes Target, Macy's, and Kmart. And

[33:33] Nordstrom and Old Navy are opening at 7

[33:36] o'clock. And if we take a look back live

[33:38] here, you can see people are already

[33:40] camping out in front of Staples. Staples

[33:43] opens up early tomorrow morning. And

[33:44] believe it or not, folks are already

[33:46] lining up for Staples. So, a lot of

[33:48] diehard shoppers out here already. And

[33:51] of course, for all of the times for

[33:52] store openings for Black Friday, just go

[33:54] to our website, kptv.com.

[33:57] Live in Tiger tonight, Jamie Wilson, the

[33:59] 11:00 news.

[34:01] >> A family in Hazdale is offering a $500

[34:04] reward tonight for the return of this

[34:05] dachshun. We told you about the wiener

[34:07] dog earlier this week. Bogey disappeared

[34:09] on Monday after a burglary. Family

[34:11] members don't know whether the burglar

[34:12] took Bogey or whether the puppy ran

[34:14] away. They've already searched the

[34:16] neighborhood in vain. If you know

[34:18] anything about the dog's whereabouts,

[34:19] please contact the family and we have a

[34:28] The top three begins tonight in Chicago

[34:30] where a gunman held two women hostage

[34:32] all day. Police arrived at this

[34:34] apartment complex just after midnight

[34:36] our time after receiving a call about

[34:37] gunfire. Officers have been negotiating

[34:39] with the gunman all day, but the

[34:41] hostages relatives have not been making

[34:43] it easy. They've been yelling at

[34:44] officers to end the standoff.

[34:48] Police say some honor students used

[34:49] their brain power for the wrong reason.

[34:51] And officers say several kids from a

[34:52] Cleveland area high school used a

[34:54] scanner, a computer, and some

[34:55] high-quality paper to create counterfeit

[34:58] cash. They say the cash looked so real,

[35:00] 14 of the bogus bills were circulated at

[35:02] a charity event. Eventually, parents

[35:04] approached school officials about rumors

[35:06] that fake money was making the rounds.

[35:08] The students could be suspended or

[35:10] expelled. They may also face criminal

[35:12] charges.

[35:14] Too much wind and barely enough helium

[35:15] should have made this annual tradition a

[35:17] bust, but you just can't rain on the

[35:19] Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Wind

[35:22] gust prompted parade organizers to keep

[35:23] the balloons flying at lower height than

[35:25] normal. And some of the characters

[35:27] needed a little more help than usual to

[35:29] make sure they were headed in the right

[35:30] direction. This is the 80th parade and

[35:33] there have been nine accidents since it

[35:34] all began, but today ended without any

[35:37] problems.

[35:40] The top three international stories

[35:42] starts in Baghdad where US troops saw

[35:44] one of the most violent days yet.

[35:46] Fighting between two Iraqi religious

[35:47] groups killed at least 161 people. More

[35:50] than 250 others are hurt. The violence

[35:53] is so bad that the airport in Baghdad

[35:54] had to shut down. Iraqi leaders also

[35:57] imposed a curfew. One of the deadliest

[35:59] attacks today involved at least five car

[36:01] bombs.

[36:02] Some US troops did get a chance to

[36:04] celebrate Thanksgiving. The military

[36:06] tried to make this time away from their

[36:07] loved ones a little bit easier by giving

[36:09] them a big feast with touches of home.

[36:11] Troops also got to enjoy some music

[36:13] while they ate.

[36:16] Tens of thousands of people in South

[36:17] Korea took to the streets to protest a

[36:19] free trade deal with the United States.

[36:21] They also want better working

[36:23] conditions. About 7,000 police officers

[36:25] were on hand yesterday to keep the

[36:26] protesters in line. They took action

[36:28] when some of the demonstrators tried to

[36:30] break in to city hall. Police actually

[36:32] beat some protesters. Demonstrators were

[36:34] throwing rocks and even ripping out

[36:36] fences. In two weeks, South Korean

[36:38] leaders will meet with US negotiators to

[36:40] work on a deal that would break down

[36:42] trade barriers.

[36:45] Now to the top three stories in the

[36:47] Northwest and we begin in Washington

[36:48] where a mudslide is threatening the

[36:50] homes of dozens of people. This month's

[36:53] record rainfall is ripping away loose

[36:54] earth and pushing mud up against homes

[36:56] in Kitsup County. People are worried

[36:58] that their houses could be pushed off

[37:00] their foundations and destroyed. Kitsub

[37:02] County Commissioners signed an emergency

[37:04] declaration yesterday which allows the

[37:06] county government to help residents

[37:08] mitigate any flood or landslide damage.

[37:11] Record rainfall has also caused millions

[37:13] of dollars in damage to the Mount Rineer

[37:15] National Park. During the last few

[37:16] weeks, flood waters washed away roads

[37:18] and trails and damaged campgrounds.

[37:21] Officials even had to close the popular

[37:22] park on November 6th. Damage is

[37:24] estimated at nearly $30 million. The

[37:27] bulk of the money will go to fixed swamp

[37:29] roads.

[37:30] In Belleview, police are trying to find

[37:32] a persistent would-be art thief who

[37:34] apparently keeps breaking the display

[37:36] he's trying to make off with.

[37:37] Surveillance tape from October 2005

[37:39] shows the man trying to steal a glass

[37:41] sculpture from a gallery at the

[37:43] Belleview Square Mall. But when part of

[37:45] the display fell apart, he panicked and

[37:47] took off. Then just last week, police

[37:49] say the man came back and tried to steal

[37:51] the same sculpture. However, it fell

[37:53] apart again and he ran away

[37:55] empty-handed. Now, Portland's first

[37:58] complete forecast at 11 from your first

[38:01] live local weather team.

[38:03] >> Hello, I'm Stephanie Crawovich infor

[38:05] chief meteorologist Mark Nelson tonight.

[38:07] Happy Thanksgiving. A look at your live

[38:09] radar to start things off. We had a very

[38:11] wet and windy Thanksgiving. Things

[38:13] drying out actually a little bit as we

[38:15] put the radar picture into motion. You

[38:18] can see the Portland area getting a

[38:19] little bit of a break from the rainfall.

[38:21] will have off and on rain showers

[38:23] throughout the night tonight, but a lot

[38:25] of snow in the Cascades. We saw several

[38:28] inches pile up on the passes today and

[38:31] also for those ski resorts. So, great

[38:33] news for skiers and snowboarders. Not so

[38:35] good news for those travelers, but uh we

[38:38] are going to see the snow let up a

[38:40] little bit tomorrow. There's still a

[38:41] heavy snow warning in effect for the

[38:43] Cascades until 6:00 tomorrow morning.

[38:46] Let's take a look at where we're seeing

[38:47] a little bit heavier rain shower right

[38:49] now as shown by that area in yellow

[38:52] around the McMinnville area. Yamhill

[38:54] Carlton also getting hit with a pretty

[38:56] big rain shower right now. But kind of

[38:58] off and on rain throughout the evening

[39:00] or the overnight hours tonight and off

[39:02] and on tomorrow, but certainly a much

[39:04] drier day tomorrow and Saturday than

[39:07] what we saw today. And then another

[39:08] system rolls in on Sunday. Here's a look

[39:10] at your 24-hour rainfall totals through

[39:12] 4:00 this afternoon. And you can see we

[39:15] picked up quite a bit of rain at the

[39:16] Portland airport. Just about a third of

[39:18] an inch in Vancouver, close to a half

[39:20] inch in Troutdale. And we have more rain

[39:24] on the way, but not quite as much.

[39:25] Temperatures tomorrow will be right

[39:27] around where they were today. 46 in

[39:29] Portland, 46 in Troutdale. It felt

[39:31] chillier than this because of those

[39:32] winds. We'll see a little bit calmer

[39:34] conditions on tap for your Friday. The

[39:37] rain snow forecast playing out like

[39:39] this. Still a lot of snow headed for the

[39:41] Cascades during the next 24 hours. We'll

[39:44] see it piling up there. So, if you do uh

[39:47] have travel plans, expect uh to need

[39:50] those traction devices for crossing

[39:52] mountain passes. The rain snow forecast

[39:54] for tomorrow night shows that next big

[39:56] batch of moisture moving in mainly for

[39:58] Sunday. Sunday night into Monday, we get

[40:00] enough cold air moving in. We could see

[40:02] the snow level drop to about 1,000 ft,

[40:04] possibly lower. We're keeping an eye on

[40:06] that. Another look at the satellite

[40:07] radar picture. You can see things have

[40:08] dried out just a little bit. And the new

[40:11] snow totals for the past 24 hours, 6 in

[40:14] at Timberline, but close to 2 feet just

[40:17] since Tuesday for that ski resort.

[40:18] Meadows not open, but picking up lots of

[40:21] new snow today. 7 in of new snow and 6

[40:24] in of new snow at Ski Bowl. So, the

[40:26] satellite picture kind of showing that

[40:28] cold air offshore and this is going to

[40:30] stay with us for tomorrow, making things

[40:31] unsettled. But the next big batch of

[40:34] moisture arrives Sunday and we see the

[40:36] snow levels really plummet with that.
