[0:26] This is the CBS Evening News. Dan Rather

[0:29] reporting from over, hovering above

[0:32] what's left of the cult compound outside

[0:34] Waco, Texas. Good evening.

[0:36] Down there, on the ground at the

[0:38] compound, there remains a volatile

[0:40] mixture of live ammunition and

[0:42] smoldering embers. Still too dangerous

[0:45] for all except the experts to go through

[0:47] on the ground, but from up here, we can

[0:50] tell you that investigators continue

[0:52] laboriously and carefully looking for

[0:54] bodies of the perhaps 90 people believed

[0:57] to have been in the compound when it

[0:59] became an inferno.

[1:00] At this hour, fewer than half that many

[1:22] in the still smoldering compound ruins.

[1:25] We have not done a safety check of the

[1:28] entire 77 acre

[1:30] facility. We have

[1:32] no way of knowing at this point what

[1:35] kind of explosives may or may not be out

[1:37] there.

[1:39] Efforts to locate bodies have been

[1:41] hampered by ammunition that is still

[1:43] exploding 2 days after the fire. So far,

[1:46] investigators have found about 40 bodies

[1:48] around the compound's perimeter, 10 of

[1:51] them women and children. Three of the

[1:53] bodies have gunshot wounds, according to

[1:55] a Justice Department spokesman. one

[1:57] victim's head was nearly blown off. It

[2:00] is not known how or when they died.
