[0:00] story tonight. A teacher with a lesson

[0:03] we could all use.

[0:07] [music]

[0:12] >> This is the CBS Evening [music] News

[0:15] with Dan Rather.

[0:18] And good evening. Dan is on assignment

[0:20] tonight. I'm John Roberts. There is no

[0:22] other way to put it. The serial sniper

[0:25] has police stomped. 17 days, 11 people

[0:28] shot, nine dead, and an army of

[0:30] investigators has no idea tonight who

[0:33] the killer is, where he is, and how he's

[0:36] making a clean getaway every time. Leads

[0:39] are evaporating. Witnesses are proving

[0:41] useless or worse. One has just been

[0:44] arrested for allegedly lying. And if

[0:47] there is any good news tonight, it's

[0:49] that the sniper hasn't struck in 4 days.

[0:53] CBS's Joey Chen begins our coverage

[0:55] tonight in Rockville, Maryland. Joey

[0:58] >> John. Late today, police arrested

[1:00] 38-year-old Matthew Dowy and charged him

[1:03] with intentionally misleading police.

[1:05] His mother has told CBS News that he has

[1:07] been in and out of jail. Now,

[1:10] investigators say that his story

[1:11] unraveled. Uh the story of seeing a van

[1:14] and a shooter, it unraveled under

[1:16] questioning. And tonight, investigators

[1:18] say that the investigation may be

[1:20] falling apart as well.

[1:23] Suburban Washington woke up to a crisp

[1:25] fall morning and another manhunt. This

[1:28] time it didn't take long to figure out

[1:30] that it was just another fall sighting.

[1:32] But as the days tick by, the jitters

[1:34] grow. This marks the longest stretch

[1:36] between attacks. There were six in two

[1:39] days at the beginning of the month. A

[1:40] weekend off, then one every other day,

[1:43] another weekend of silence, and then the

[1:45] shooting last Monday night.
