[0:16] evening. On World News Tonight, dozens

[0:19] of people on Capitol Hill test positive

[0:21] for exposure to anthrax. But there's

[0:24] confusion today about the nature of the

[0:26] threat. The Bush administration says the

[0:29] country is prepared for bioteterrorism,

[0:31] but prepared for what? How much damage

[0:34] has been done to the economy? The job

[0:37] fair is one place to see it. The Federal

[0:39] Reserve chairman is not sure about the

[0:42] future. And is there too much news about

[0:45] anthrax? The public tells us yes and no.

[0:53] From ABC News World Headquarters in New

[0:56] York, this is World News Tonight with

[0:59] Peter Jennings. Good evening everyone.

[1:01] We're going to begin in Washington this

[1:02] evening by trying to get at the truth

[1:04] about the anthrax threat on Capitol

[1:06] Hill. There is no doubt about the

[1:08] exposure. We know that almost three

[1:10] dozen people have been exposed to

[1:12] anthrax and others are still being

[1:13] tested. This does not necessarily mean

[1:16] infection. But all over the capital

[1:18] today, there was confusion and

[1:20] contradiction about what had really

[1:22] occurred when a poisoned letter arrived

[1:24] in Senator Dashel's office and

[1:26] subsequently what has happened since.

[1:28] So, let us go straight to our Capitol

[1:30] Hill correspondent, Linda Douglas.

[1:31] Linda, to put it bluntly, was pretty

[1:33] hard getting a straight story out of

[1:35] that place today. All day long. And as

[1:37] the number of positive tests for anthrax

[1:39] increased throughout the day, the

[1:41] congressional leaders tried to project

[1:43] calm. But Peter, they did not always

[1:46] succeed.
