[0:00] hello friends at Bible Baptist greetings
[0:03] from Northwest Arkansas and they're
[0:05] coming to you from my gospel live
[0:08] Baptist Church here in Rogers and my
[0:10] name is Taylor Gillespie I know many of
[0:12] you
[0:12] but brother Pearson asked if I would
[0:15] record a few devotions and send them
[0:16] over yells away and try to be an
[0:19] encouragement to the church and so I
[0:20] said absolutely I'd love to do that and
[0:23] so I want to speak to you from First
[0:24] Samuel chapter number 16 and I've been
[0:27] studying and meditating on this passage
[0:29] so I'm gonna share a few just
[0:31] encouraging and even challenging
[0:32] thoughts from this passage that I I
[0:34] believe will be a help and encouragement
[0:36] to you and a trust you all are doing
[0:38] well and I know we've been locked down
[0:41] in quarantine for a number of weeks now
[0:43] and it's things begin to slowly return
[0:46] back to normal
[0:47] we anticipate that but while we're still
[0:50] some of us can find that home I hope the
[0:53] God's Word will be an encouragement to
[0:55] your heart so first samuel chapter
[0:56] number 16 and when you come to the
[0:59] chapter here we it opens up in verse
[1:00] number 1 with an old man that is
[1:03] mourning he's grieving he's crying in
[1:06] fact you'll find the word mourn there in
[1:08] verse number 1 and it means to mourn for
[1:10] someone who has died so this is heavy
[1:13] mourning this is deep grief and notice
[1:16] that the Bible says in chapter 16 verse
[1:19] 1 and the Lord sent unto Samuel the man
[1:21] that's mourning if Samuel you remember
[1:23] he was the last of the judges he's an
[1:25] old man now and the Lord said unto
[1:27] Samuel how long will that mourn for Saul
[1:31] seeing I have rejected him from reigning
[1:34] over Israel and here Samuel is mourning
[1:38] over Saul if you were to go back several
[1:40] chapters you'll remember how God's
[1:42] people Israel came to Samuel and so
[1:45] Samuel we want a king we want to have a
[1:47] king like everybody else we we want to
[1:50] be like all the other nations around us
[1:52] we want to be like everybody else we
[1:54] know that God is in heaven but we want a
[1:57] king that you can see here on earth we
[1:59] want a king and so Samuel goes to the
[2:02] Lord and says Lord they want a king and
[2:04] the Lord says to Samuel okay give them
[2:08] what they want and so the people chose
[2:10] for themselves a king and that first
[2:12] king was saw and saw
[2:13] was tall dark and handsome I mean he
[2:16] looked like a king he carried himself
[2:17] like a king I mean he was king material
[2:20] based on his appearance and he started
[2:23] off well he was very humble he knew how
[2:25] to rally the people together and get the
[2:28] army together but unfortunately he begin
[2:30] to rebelled against the Lord and after
[2:33] that third sin that third act of
[2:35] rebellion
[2:36] the Lord said you're done and the Lord
[2:38] rejected him from being king and in and
[2:41] and and finally you come here and of
[2:44] course it's chapter 16 verse number one
[2:46] now and and Samuel is mourning over that
[2:49] he's mourning over Saul and I think it'd
[2:51] be safe to say that Saul was a was a big
[2:54] disappointment and here he's Samuels
[2:58] mourning over of that and can I just say
[3:01] in life a disappointment is a part of
[3:03] life you're gonna be disappointed from
[3:05] time to time and most of the time our
[3:07] disappointments are with people and
[3:09] disappointment is an unmet expectation
[3:12] and you had a certain expectation and
[3:15] somebody did not meet that expectation
[3:17] and resulted in disappointment can I
[3:20] just say that people are going to
[3:22] disappoint you hey family sometimes
[3:24] we'll disappoint you friends will
[3:26] sometimes disappoint you people at
[3:28] church will disappoint us most of all
[3:30] we're going to disappoint ourselves from
[3:32] time to time and when you and I
[3:34] experience disappointments in our life
[3:36] it's normal and it's natural and it's
[3:38] even healthy to mourn and to grieve over
[3:42] those disappointments but can I say this
[3:45] we can't mourn forever and that's kind
[3:49] of what's taking place here in verse
[3:50] number one and so the Lord asked Samuel
[3:53] how long are you going to mourn over
[3:56] Saul and in other words of the the
[3:59] implication from the question is this
[4:01] Samuel you need to stop mourning and
[4:04] start moving you need to stop grieving
[4:06] and start going listen it's okay to
[4:08] mourn and grieve but we can't mourn
[4:11] forever and the Lord was about to reveal
[4:14] the Samuel he says I know that you're
[4:16] disappointed but I want you to know that
[4:18] I have a plan and Samuel is but really
[4:21] panicking and thinking well who's gonna
[4:22] lead us and who's gonna be her King and
[4:24] as Saul was not who we thought he was
[4:26] going to be
[4:27] and what in fact Israel's is even
[4:30] spiritually not in a good condition what
[4:33] are we going to do and can I say in
[4:35] spite of his disappointment God had a
[4:38] plan and today you may be facing a
[4:40] disappointment in your life you may be
[4:42] disappointed over a circumstance or a
[4:44] situation over a person in your life
[4:47] listen to me God has a plan and notice
[4:50] the last phrase in verse number 1 God
[4:52] says for I have provided me a king among
[4:56] his sons listen a man panics but God
[4:59] provides and a god tell Samuel listen
[5:03] I've already provided me a king I want
[5:05] you to grab your horn horn and fill it
[5:07] up with all I want you to go to
[5:09] Bethlehem and go to Jesse's house
[5:11] because I've already provided from me a
[5:13] son a king among one of his sons one of
[5:16] his sons will be the next king well he
[5:19] grabs the Horn of wool says okay I got
[5:21] it
[5:21] and in verse number two he says wait a
[5:23] second how can I do this
[5:25] it's as I saw catches me going to anoint
[5:29] the next king he's gonna take my lives
[5:31] and so there was great fear and so again
[5:34] he panics and so the Lord says here just
[5:37] take a heifer with you and go to
[5:39] Bethlehem and if anybody stops you along
[5:41] the way just tell him you're going to
[5:43] sacrifice in Bethlehem well finally he
[5:46] shows up in Bethlehem and even the
[5:48] people come out in verse number four and
[5:50] they say come us now peaceably I mean
[5:52] they were panicked as well there's fear
[5:54] all across the lamp and so in verse
[5:56] number five that same it says I come
[5:58] peaceably and he gathers Jesse's family
[6:01] together it says we're gonna have a
[6:02] sacrifice and so Jesse calls his sons in
[6:06] a seven of his sons and there they
[6:09] gather around the sacrifice and I can
[6:11] just imagine
[6:12] Jesse's looking at them and Samuel is
[6:14] looking at them the sons are looking at
[6:16] each other and they don't know what's
[6:19] going on I and sandals there and he
[6:22] knows he's there to anoint the next king
[6:24] but he doesn't know which of the sons is
[6:26] going to be the next king and so the
[6:29] first one comes out and it's Alya and he
[6:31] comes out and in fact notice the Bible
[6:33] says in verse 6 and it came to pass when
[6:35] they were come that he looked on a lie
[6:37] of and said surely this the Lord's
[6:40] anointed
[6:41] is before him and well he looked at a
[6:43] liar but he is the young man that's tall
[6:45] dark and handsome and he looks much like
[6:49] saw-like king material and so yeah
[6:52] samuel thanks to himself surely this is
[6:55] the next king I mean he looks like a
[6:58] king he sounds like a king he carries
[7:00] himself like a king I mean he had been
[7:02] prepared from battle in Chapter
[7:04] seventeen he's out on the battlefield
[7:06] and so single thing surely this is the
[7:09] next king of Israel but notice what God
[7:12] says in the next verse verse number
[7:14] seven but the Lord said in the same
[7:17] you'll look not on his countenance or in
[7:19] the height of his stature because I have
[7:21] refused him for the Lord saith not as
[7:24] man seeth for the man for man looketh on
[7:27] the outward appearance but the Lord
[7:29] looketh on the heart God says the Samuel
[7:33] Samuel I don't see people the way that
[7:36] you see people when I when you look at a
[7:38] man you see as height you see a stature
[7:40] you see his face you see his appearance
[7:43] you see his image but when I look on a
[7:45] man I see past the appearance and I see
[7:48] past the image and I see past the way
[7:50] that he looks and I see deeper than that
[7:53] I can see his character and I can see
[7:55] the condition of his heart and I want
[7:58] you know that Alya may look impressive
[8:00] to you and he may have appear to have a
[8:03] good image but I want you know there's
[8:05] some there's some things going on in
[8:06] Samuel that I in Alya
[8:09] and as a result of his character he's
[8:13] not the next king of Israel and in fact
[8:17] you go to chapter 17 and we find out
[8:19] that Alya was negative and he was
[8:21] critical and he looked down on David and
[8:23] so the Lord says he's not the next king
[8:26] and so the next one comes out the next
[8:28] son and that's a bit of DAB and sure
[8:29] enough a same thing a he tree was tall
[8:32] dark and handsome he looked like a king
[8:34] he carried himself like a king and once
[8:36] again Samuel thought to himself surely
[8:38] this is the Lord's anointed but then the
[8:41] Lord in fortin's young I know this is
[8:43] not the next king when he goes to the
[8:45] next time the next son of Shama and sure
[8:47] enough the same thing he looks
[8:49] impressive his appearance I looked like
[8:51] a king but and a Samuel says once again
[8:54] surely this is the Lord's anointed he
[8:57] thinks to himself and for the third time
[8:59] the Lord says no this is not the next
[9:02] king and in fact they go through all
[9:04] seven of the sons and every one the Lord
[9:07] says that's not him that's not him
[9:09] that's not he'll and finally he gets
[9:12] down to the end and Samuel is
[9:15] exasperated and he says Jesse do you
[9:18] have any more sons left and Jesse says
[9:22] well now that I think yeah I got one
[9:24] more
[9:25] but he's the youngest and he's out there
[9:27] keeping of the sheep and so listen I
[9:30] don't know if Jesse fully understood
[9:32] what was going on that day but but but
[9:35] let's say that he did and if he knew
[9:37] that Sagna was there to anoint the next
[9:39] king really what he was saying was yes I
[9:42] have one son but he is he is so if
[9:46] you're looking for a candidate to be the
[9:47] next king it's gonna be one of these
[9:49] seven sons that I have here it certainly
[9:52] won't be the one that I got out there
[9:53] keeping the Sheep I mean it certainly
[9:55] won't be my youngest son I mean out of
[9:57] all my sons that of each that could be
[10:00] the next king my youngest son the one
[10:03] out there keeping the Sheep is the most
[10:05] unlikely candidate to be the next king
[10:09] in fact when he was calling in the rest
[10:11] of the sons he said he when he called in
[10:15] his sons for the sacrifice he considered
[10:18] a David so insignificant or maybe he
[10:20] just forgot about him altogether but he
[10:23] didn't even call Jesse Jesse didn't even
[10:26] call Davidian to be a part of the
[10:28] sacrifice and so David was certainly so
[10:31] lowly estimated in the eyes of his own
[10:35] family and considered so unlikely that
[10:37] he was not even called to the sacrifice
[10:40] but Jesse was about and the rest of the
[10:43] family was about to receive the surprise
[10:45] of his life and I cannot say this about
[10:49] God's choice since when it comes to the
[10:52] people that God chooses and that's
[10:54] really what we're dealing with in this
[10:55] passage when it comes to the people that
[10:57] God chooses God's choices are surprising
[11:01] and so they call in they call in David
[11:05] someone goes to get David in fact Samuel
[11:07] said I'm not going to leave
[11:08] until I laid eyes on him somebody go get
[11:10] that young man and they ran out there
[11:12] and called out into the fields they said
[11:14] hey hey David come on inside I coming
[11:16] through the house they want you and so
[11:18] they called Davidian and he walks in of
[11:21] course just a teenage young man and
[11:23] smells like sheep but he walks into the
[11:26] house there and when samuel sees David
[11:30] the Lord says this is if this is the
[11:33] next king and he says I want you to
[11:35] anoint him
[11:36] and so the old man Samuel hobbles across
[11:39] the room and takes the old and puts it
[11:41] on pours it on just David's head and
[11:44] detects doesn't tell us but I believe
[11:46] that he leaned over to it and whispered
[11:48] in his ear David you're going to be of
[11:50] the next king well let me tell you
[11:52] something the the the the Lord's choices
[11:56] are so surprising it's surprising and
[11:59] who God chooses to use and who God
[12:01] doesn't choose to use and I tell
[12:04] teenagers I can't this all the time I'll
[12:06] say you you don't understand this now
[12:08] but sin twenty years from now you're
[12:11] gonna look back and you're gonna
[12:13] remember and think about the people you
[12:15] went to church with or you were raised
[12:17] up in the youth group with or you went
[12:18] to a Christian school with and I said
[12:20] you're gonna be surprised twenty years
[12:22] from now at who God's who God uses and
[12:25] who God doesn't use and so often we get
[12:29] a Namur about maybe a young person who
[12:31] is it was well-spoken and has a good
[12:33] appearance and carries himself well and
[12:36] and maybe spiritually we look at that
[12:39] young person and say well that boy if
[12:41] God's gonna use that for young person
[12:43] they're gonna go far forgotten God's
[12:44] gonna use them a great way I mean they
[12:46] they just appear to be a young person
[12:49] that will be used by God listen to me
[12:51] you may be surprised yet on the other
[12:54] hand there may be a young person in the
[12:56] youth group that is shy introverted and
[12:58] backwards and it doesn't have very good
[13:00] social skills and we look at that young
[13:03] person and say well well good God God
[13:05] will never use having young person will
[13:07] never do anything for God listen you may
[13:09] be surprised
[13:10] God's choices are surprising and here we
[13:14] find that God bypasses all the other
[13:16] sons and yet he chooses the most
[13:18] unlikely candidate and that young person
[13:21] was was dead
[13:22] now listen on the surface there would
[13:24] appear to be nothing impressive about
[13:26] David there was nothing that we think
[13:29] would have attracted God to humor Oh oh
[13:32] it would have been impressive to God on
[13:34] the surface but when we begin to dig
[13:36] into this passage we find and then
[13:38] there's some phrases and clues here that
[13:40] really revealed the inner qualities that
[13:43] David possess and I believe those were
[13:46] the reasons why God chose David to be
[13:48] the next king of Israel and I think when
[13:51] we look at those qualities we'll also
[13:52] answer the question what kind of people
[13:54] does God choose today what kind of
[13:57] people does God choose to use and I want
[14:00] to give you the first point in this
[14:01] video and then we'll look at the next
[14:03] two in the next two videos but the first
[14:05] reason that I believe that God chose
[14:07] David to be king was this was because he
[14:10] was spiritual he was spiritual in fact
[14:14] when you go back to chapter number 13
[14:15] and a Samuel is talking to Saul and says
[14:18] Saul you've been rejected and the next
[14:20] king that God will choose now y'all
[14:22] chose this king but the king that God
[14:25] will choose it will be a man after God's
[14:28] own heart in fact he says God is looking
[14:30] for a man that is after God's own heart
[14:34] and when you come to chapter 16 we find
[14:37] that that man that God was looking for
[14:39] was the shepherd boy David and we find
[14:42] out that David was a man after God's own
[14:45] heart you say what does that mean it
[14:47] means simply this that that when you're
[14:50] a man after a woman or a teenager after
[14:52] God's own heart
[14:53] it simply means this it means your life
[14:56] is in harmony with God it means that
[14:59] what's important to God is important to
[15:01] you what God cares about you care about
[15:03] what bothers gon bothers you it means
[15:06] when God turns right you turn right it
[15:09] means when God turns left you turn left
[15:11] when God says stop that it's wrong get
[15:13] it out of your life then you stop it and
[15:16] you get that particular sin or whatever
[15:18] it is out of your life when God says go
[15:20] a you go it means that your life is in
[15:23] harmony with God you're in sync with God
[15:25] you are in step with God that's what it
[15:28] means to be a man after God's own heart
[15:30] that's what it means to be spiritual
[15:33] you're sensitive to the to the Lord
[15:36] can ask you a question today very simply
[15:38] is your life in a harmony with God God
[15:43] uses spiritual people and listen it
[15:46] takes time to cultivate that kind of
[15:49] relationship with the Lord but the good
[15:51] news is you can have that kind of
[15:53] relationship with the Lord God chose
[15:56] David because he was spiritual and God
[16:00] chooses people today and uses people
[16:03] today that are spiritual maybe during
[16:06] this quarantine you maybe your
[16:08] relationship with the Lord
[16:09] and maybe you have you've improved it
[16:11] and maybe there this time of a downtown
[16:14] in quarantine you have really gotten
[16:16] closer to the Lord than you ever had
[16:18] before but maybe uh maybe I'm speaking
[16:21] to some people today who that wasn't the
[16:24] case that wasn't the case for you and
[16:26] maybe over these past several weeks
[16:28] instead of getting closer to the Lord
[16:30] you've gotten away from the Lord and now
[16:33] you your life is no longer in a harmony
[16:37] with the Lord well I want you to know
[16:39] I'm not beating you up I've come to
[16:41] encourage you to say listen if that's
[16:42] been the case that won't you spend some
[16:44] time today getting your your life back
[16:48] in harmony with the Lord and say Lord
[16:50] I've been out of step with you and I've
[16:52] been out of sync with you but Lord I
[16:54] want that to change today and Lord I
[16:56] want to be an individual a man a woman a
[16:58] teenager that you can use and Lord I see
[17:01] from the passage today from First Samuel
[17:03] chapter 16 that the first quality that
[17:06] you're looking for in an individual that
[17:08] you will use is they must be spiritual
[17:11] and Lord I want you to use my life so
[17:14] Lord would you help me would you help my
[17:16] life to get back into harmony with you
[17:19] for the first reason that God chose
[17:21] David to be the king I believe was this
[17:24] because he was spiritual let me
[17:26] challenge you today cultivate a heart
[17:29] for God Lord bless you I hope that this
[17:31] has been an encouragement to you I look
[17:33] forward in the next two videos and the
[17:36] next two devotions and sharing with you
[17:37] of the next two reasons well I believe
[17:39] that God chose David to be the king Lord
[17:42] bless you have a great day
