[0:08] >> This week with David Brinkley. Now from
[0:11] our Washington headquarters, here's
[0:13] David Brinkley.
[0:15] >> Now, President Bush has offered an end
[0:17] to the arms race, an end to 45 years of
[0:20] competition with the Soviet Union in
[0:23] building ever more deadly nuclear
[0:25] weapons, and in the process running both
[0:27] countries deeply into debt. The
[0:30] president said he was ordering the
[0:31] removal of American short-range nuclear
[0:34] weapons worldwide, land, sea, and air to
[0:37] make the world a less dangerous place,

[0:44] Gorbachev said, "We support this, but we

[0:52] have questions for our Secretary of
[0:54] Defense, Dick Cheney. Another
[0:57] development, the Governor's Panel on

[1:15] man Jack Smith, and our discussion here
[1:18] with George Will, Sam Donaldson, and
[1:22] Cookie Roberts here on our Sunday
[1:24] program.
[1:27] First, the other news since the Sunday
[1:29] morning papers. Late last night, a
[1:31] colonel in the Salvadoran Army was
[1:33] convicted of the 1989 murders of six
[1:37] Catholic priests, their housekeeper, and
[1:39] her 15year-old daughter. After decades
[1:42] of human rights abuses in El Salvador,
[1:44] this is the first time a high-ranking
[1:46] soldier was put on trial.
[1:48] The UN inspection team in Iraq returned
[1:51] to its
