[0:00] with this reporting. [music] We'll be

[0:01] back at 6.

[0:04] >> From ABC, [music] this is a special

[0:06] edition of World News Tonight with Peter

[0:09] Jennings.

[0:10] >> Good evening. We begin tonight with what

[0:11] we believe is the latest news. Late this

[0:13] evening, Baghdad Radio carried an

[0:15] announcement allegedly from Saddam

[0:17] Hussein himself, ordering his troops to

[0:19] withdraw from Kuwait. He said they

[0:22] should do so in accordance with the

[0:23] Soviet Union's plan for a political

[0:25] settlement of the war, which the

[0:27] president turned down three days ago. At

[0:29] the time, the Iraqis had said they would

[0:31] begin to pull out after a ceasefire,

[0:33] which the president rejected. Now, we're

[0:35] not quite sure exactly what all this

[0:36] means, but standing by at the White

[0:38] House is ABC's Brit Hume. How's the

[0:40] White House reacting, Brit?

[0:41] >> Well, the White House isn't quite sure

[0:43] what all this means either, uh, Peter,

[0:46] playing paddle ball this afternoon when

[0:48] the wire service reports, which is all

[0:50] that the White House says it's seen of

[0:52] these, uh, hit and he was contacted

[0:55] about it. and his press spokesman Marlon

[0:56] Fitzwwater said after a conversation

[0:58] with him and I quote, "We have no

[1:01] contact about this with our government,

[1:03] no authoritative contact with the UN. We

[1:05] don't think there is anything to respond

[1:07] to. The war goes on."

[1:09] >> Any inclination to a political

[1:10] settlement as best you can tell? Well,

[1:12] Peter, as it happens, I discussed this

[1:14] very kind of a scenario with a senior

[1:16] administration official uh a little

[1:18] earlier this aft
